Coming to work every morning was a little different than going to school. I was worried every morning about being late and that I needed to prove everyone that I was not just "another" high school student that does not care about being here. I exactly knew what I had to do to prove myself and that was putting more than 100% effort on all the work my mentor gave me. The very first week my mentor told me "I am very impressed" I was excited and proud of myself. He told me that some of things he has taught me I understood it faster and better than some college students or past interns he has had. That was when I knew I was gaining more responsibilities in my internship.
I have learned so many things from all the engineers, and not just about engineering about about the future. Especially college. I have been working with Ivan (he is an engineering at RBF) and he has made me feel welcomed and makes me feel like I can push myself to do things that I do not think I can do. I have done a little bit of everything. He has been the one person that has given me advice on procrastination, college, testing, work, public speaking, meetings and so many other things in just 3 weeks. This internship has also made me think about what I want to study, and it's not Civil Engineering. I have learned so many things and I love learning about this but now knowing exactly what Civil Engineering is I would not want to pursue this as my career. RBF has helped move to the path I know I want to walk into and not be stuck in a path that I think I want.
I have been wanting to ask some of the workers what they expected of me and what expectations changed. When I came in to this work place I knew about working with others and the respect I wanted to have and the respect I had to give them. I do have a job after school so I had some experience, but the workplace is way different. The first day I was ready for anything, I had to be responsible, and organized. I was and still am all those things, but now I know that these qualities are more important than I thought.
